Archaeology and climatic studies of the Courtyard of the Lions, subject for debate in the Palace of Charles V

Archaeology and micro-climatic studies of the Hall of the Kings and the Courtyard of the Lions have been the nucleus of debate and opinion in the second day of the course The restoration of the Fountain of the Lions in the Alhambra: criteria, processes and methodology, which is organized by the Mediterranean Centre of Granada University (UGR) and the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife in the Palace of Charles V, and is being extended until next Friday.
Carlo Cacace,  physicist from the Instituto Centrale per el Restauro, has given detailed conclusions of the research on the microclimate of the complex of the Hall of the Kings and the Courtyard of the Lions, where records were taken between 2001-2006 and in 2003 and 2006, respectively. During this time a monitoring station controlled the measurements every day for 30 minutes. “The behaviour of the microclimate in this area is essential for its conservation”.
A hundred participants, among them art historians, university students, architects, etc., will have the opportunity to learn about the key points behind the restoration in the “heart of the Alhambra” in the course The restoration of the Fountain of the Lions in the Alhambra: criteria, processes and methodology, directed by María del Mar Villafranca, Director of the Monument, and by the architect Pedro Salmerón, who has led the restoration of the hydraulic circuit of the fountain.
The restoration work in the Courtyard of the Lions will be the nucleus of tomorrow’s sessions, in which there will be talks by the restorers Carmen Tienza and Beatriz Martín, as well as by the architects Pedro Salmerón and Diego Garzón together with the industrial engineer Patricio Bautista..
