Touch points

Help us to Preserve the Monument.

OBJECTIVE

Inform the public about the negative consequences for tourism of handling, touching, scratching or writing on the monument.
To do this, we are going to build a number of panels which will show the value of the work of art in plaster, wood, stone and ceramics and the damage caused by the visitor.
The message we want to put across is that visitors must not touch the decorative work inside the monument. In order to satisfy the need that some people have to “touch”, we will be preparing “Touch Points” with real examples for the visitors to experiment with. They will be translated into English, French and Braille.
The touch points are also designed to be used by blind and disabled people (wheelchairs).

TYPES OF TOUCH POINTS AND LOCATIONS

We believe that a key place in which we will be able to install the panels with most information and in which they will not obstruct the visit is at the entrance to the monument, near the ticket-office.
The other panels will be distributed around the different rooms, and only in those places in which there are decorative elements of this kind that require conservation. These panels will be smaller and will only contain basic information. The first phase will begin in the Machuca Court Gallery, the Hall of the Ship, the Hall of the Muqarnas, the Hall of the Mullions and the north pavilion of the Generalife.

TOUCH POINT IN THE TICKET-OFFICE AREA

At these points, which will come in the form of a triangular totem display, visitors will be able to touch panels with plasterwork, wood carvings and hewn stones.
Content: There will be five blocks of content.

  • Block 1: Touch Point Identification details. Title and Material
  • Block 2: Photographs identifying the pieces
  • Block 3: Description of the material and why it deteriorates: there will be a brief explanation of the causes of the damage, stressing particularly those caused by man. The text will be in Spanish, English and French.
  • Block 4: Text in Spanish Braille with a summary of Block 3. This will be accompanied by a replica of an original which can be touched.
  • There will also be a brief text in Spanish, English and French asking visitors for their collaboration to ensure the conservation of the monument.
  • Block 5: More photographs of the material and the logo of the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife.

TOUCH POINTS IN THE HALLS

At these points the visitors will be able to touch panels with plasterwork, wood carving, hewn stone and ceramic tiles from the area in which the panel is located.
Not all these panels will have the four materials. The panels in the Generalife and the Hall of the Mullions will have two.
Content: There will be five blocks of content.

  • Block 1: Text in Spanish, English and Braille
  • Block 2: Replica of the tilework with the name of the material in Spanish, English and Spanish Braille
  • Block 3: Replica of the plasterwork with the name of the material in Spanish, English and Spanish Braille.
  • Block 4: Replica of the woodwork with the name of the material in Spanish, English and Spanish Braille
  • Block 5: Replica of the stonework with the name of the material in Spanish, English and Spanish Braille
