This book tells the fascinating story of the art and design produced in Spain under Islamic rule and examines its influence on European decorative arts.
It traces the history of the decorative arts of “al-Andalus” from the ‘Golden Age’ of the Umayyad caliphate, to the Nasrids the last dynasty to rule Granada. It also explores the phenomenon of the ‘Mudejar’ in the Renaissance period, an art-form that was Arab-influenced but produced by Christians, and continues right up until the ‘Alhambresque’, a style promoted by European designers such as Owen Jones in the 19th Century.
This publication, which is lavishly illustrated with objects drawn from the Victoria and Albert Museum collections (ivory, glass pieces, tombstones, capitals, jewellery, textiles and ceramics), addresses the creation, suppression, influence and rediscovery of Islamic art in Spain from the eighth to the twentieth century.
