The Alhambra opens the enigmatic Gate of the Seven Floors to the public

The Alhambra is opening to the public one of the most enigmatic spaces in the Group of Monuments: la Puerta de los Siete Suelos or Gate of the Seven Floors. Every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday in August visitors holding the Alhambra General Admission and the Alhambra Gardens, Generalife and Alcazaba tickets will be able to visit the gate through which the Castilian troops entered the Alhambra in the early hours of 2nd January 1492, after the pact between the Christian Monarchs and the Sultan Boabdil.

Situated on the south side of the walls, the Gate of the Seven Floors was built in the mid 14th Century on top a smaller pre-existing structure and had a ceremonial function, as recounted in chronicles of the time, as a place in which military jousts and parades were held.

The Gate of the Seven Floors, which is also known as Bab al-Gudur, Puerta de los Pozos or Puerta de las Albercas, is one of the most important spaces in the Monument due to its decoration, structural complexity and symbolic character. A wide array of legends have grown up around it, including those narrated by the American writer Washington Irving in The Moor’s Legacy, one of his well-known Tales of the Alhambra. In 2004, the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife carried out full cleaning and repair work on the defensive tower above the Gate.
