The Alhambra fascinates José Mujica, the ex-President of Uruguay

The ex-president of Uruguay, José Mujica, visited the Alhambra this morning. At his own specific request, he made a gap in his busy schedule because he did not want to leave Andalusia without first visiting the Alhambra, in which he toured each of the rooms in the Nasrid Palaces declaring himself to be “fascinated”.

Before beginning his tour, Mujica was welcomed by the Director of the Alhambra, Reynaldo Fernández Manzano, who asked him to sign the Book of Honour in which he expressed his profound admiration for this place: “At last I am almost in a paradise constructed and conserved by mortal men. My life is slipping away amidst dreams of a world without passwords… But there are still things that take our breath away. I would like to thank you for that. Thanks for life and for the History of Spain”.

Just like any other tourist, José Mujica strolled around the Alhambra and expressed his surprise about its “excellent state of conservation”. He was also interested in the inscriptions and the decorations on the walls of the Palace of Comares. To such an extent that on more than one occasion he stopped to wonder “if Trade Unions had existed in the time of the Nasrids? To make something as wonderful as this, the craftsman must have been working day and night”.
