The Alhambra celebrates International Museum Day with guided visits, exhibitions and by awarding the prizes for the Draw and Learn competition

Children were centre stage today at the Museum of the Alhambra during the celebrations to mark International Museum Day, for which this year’s slogan was “Museums and Cultural Landscapes”. In order to participate in this event, the Alhambra organized a wide array of activities which began with the prizes for the Draw and Learn in the Museum competition, in which more than 1000 children from Granada and its province took part. They also inaugurated an exhibition entitled “Glass at the Alhambra from the Nasrid period to the 17th century”, volunteers led free guided visits and the Museum opened up for night visits from 21:30-23:30.
The winners and finalists in the 2016 competition were: Gabrielly Ferreira (3^rd year Primary from the Colegio Virgen de las Nieves); Ibai Martirena (Finalist, 3^rd year Primary from the Virgen de las Nieves); Carmen Fernández (6^th year Primary from the CEIP Victoria Eugenia); Dario Escabias (Finalist. Drawing en famille); Mireya Ramírez (2nd year Secondary at the Colegio Nuestra Señora de la Consolación in Granada); Paula García (Finalist. Drawing en famille); Jorge Alberto (4^th year secondary from the Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria Miguel de Cervantes) and David Consesa (Finalist. 4th year secondary from the Instituto Enseñanza Secundaria Miguel de Cervantes).
The Museum of the Alhambra will be opening for night-time visits every Friday until 30th September from 21:30-23:30. Admission will be free.
Every 18th May the International Council of Museums (ICOM) chooses a different slogan for its International Museum Day event in which it seeks to share the concerns of the museum community with the general public, so as to raise awareness of the fact that “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples”.
On this the 38th edition of this event, the chosen theme highlighted the responsibility of museums towards the environments of which they form part, to which they can contribute with their specific knowledge and skills.
