“Mass tourism has serious consequences for heritage conservation” according to the Director of the Alhambra and Generalife, who this morning opened the MA in Museology at the UGR

The School of the Alhambra and the University of Granada have launched the eighth edition of the University’s Own Master’s Degree in Museology. This morning, the Director of the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife, María del Mar Villafranca, the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Granada (UGR), Victor Medina, and the Vice President for Graduate and Postgraduate Education at the UGR, Lola Ferre, welcomed the students that enrolled on this new edition of the MA course.

Later the head of the Alhambra gave a lecture entitled “The Museumization of Heritage – Cultural tourism”, in which she reflected on heritage and culture, placing special emphasis on the harmful effects of mass tourism on our Heritage because, in her view, "it has a negative effect on conservation. Tourism is necessary, but it is not the solution to the problems faced by our heritage ".

For his part, Victor Medina said that he was most pleased to be organizing a new edition of the UGR’s Own Master’s degree in Museology, which is also “affected by the crisis. It gives me great pleasure to present a new edition of the course. In addition to creating jobs, this MA is one of the highest quality courses offered by our university. We want to continue training the professionals who will be staffing our museums in the future".

Organized by the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Granada, Victor Medina Jesus, the Master’s main objective is to train specialists in the management of heritage and culture in museums and in museological activities as essential resources for social and economic development.

The Master’s Degree in Museology is aimed at university graduates with degrees related with museums and the activities that take place inside them: Archaeology, Fine Arts, History, Art, Science Education, Architecture, Communication, Psychology, Science and other associated disciplines.

Included by the ICTOP on the world list of high quality Masters in Museology and considered one of the 250 best in Spain, the Master’s Course has been very well received in the professional sector, according to different assessments of internal and external quality due to the high level of demand from students and the excellent labor market outcomes.
