THE MADRAZA. The key role of education in Hispano-Muslim society

The basis of all teaching was learning the Koran. This was the most important aspect of elementary education, which children began at Koranic schools or at home.
Teaching methods were based above all on memory and repetition, although some sources claim that in the Kingdom of Granada learning was also based on poetry and rhyming prose, which would have been a radical innovation compared to other Islamic countries.
Higher level education was provided in the mosques, although in some cases they also taught primary children.
A profound change in the education system and structure came with the appearance of the madrazas. For the first time teaching was taken outside the mosque to a specific purpose-built building.
The Kingdom of Granada was fortunate enough to have the first and only madraza in al-Andalus. This was a public institution which also sought to protect the arts and sciences and defend the prestige of Granada.
In the Madraza of Granada, there were several outstanding teachers who made it a leading cultural centre in the 14th and 15th centuries.
The Madraza is undoubtedly one of the most representative buildings of Nasrid society in the city of Granada.
During this themed talk we will try to study the evolution of this space and its main functions past and present. We will also be looking at the building process over the centuries to explain how it arrived at its current state.
