Conservation Department

Conservation Department runs six operational programmes, or action plans. The Conservation Programme is dedicated to the conservation of the Historical-Artistic Monuments Complex; its activities include protecting the site and overseeing the sustainable management of the Alhambra landscape resources. The Restoration Programme supervises restoration and preservation activities. The Archaeological Programme conducts research, an activity which over the years has uncovered some very fruitful findings. Finally, the sustainable preservation, planning and management of the landscape, as well as the conservation of the ecosystems and natural habitats, are under the auspices of the Forests, Flower and Vegetable Gardens Programme, and the Biodiversity Programme.

  • In the field of Conservation, which is the priority for the Council of the Alhambra?

Nowadays, the study of the Monument as a heritage resource requires the development of preventive strategies for effective preservation.

Additionally, the application of intervention criteria based on the principle of respect for authenticity, the development of sophisticated analysis techniques and the use of efficient and reversible treatment processes, have led to highly specialised restoration actions, as well as to changes in the traditional conservation strategies used for damage  prevention, preservation, and systematic analysis.

  • Are Flower and Vegetable Gardens and Forests part of the Alhambra? Have the consequences of climate change been taken into consideration for this ecosystem?

Problems such as climate change make it necessary the promotion of the ecological functions of the forests.

Therefore, the Council of the Alhambra concerned with the conservation of the flora and fauna of the complex carries out different preventive and maintenance measures.

An example of this is the project "Sustainable Ecosystems" associated to the Program of Conservation of the biological balance and Biodiversity of the Alhambra.
