Conservation Department runs six operational programmes, or action plans. The Conservation Programme is dedicated to the conservation of the Historical-Artistic Monuments Complex; its activities include protecting the site and overseeing the sustainable management of the Alhambra landscape resources. The Restoration Programme supervises restoration and preservation activities. The Archaeological Programme conducts research, an activity which over the years has uncovered some very fruitful findings. Finally, the sustainable preservation, planning and management of the landscape, as well as the conservation of the ecosystems and natural habitats, are under the auspices of the Forests, Flower and Vegetable Gardens Programme, and the Biodiversity Programme.

One of today’s main problems is the protection of historical and cultural heritage of past and present civilizations.
The preservation of cultural heritage is complemented with the defence of nature and the environmental and ecologic balance.
All these issues play an essential role in the preservation of our historical memory as a guarantee of the preservation of our cultural identity and of our survival and development.
The Council of the Alhambra and the Generalife, as the institution in charge of these actions, develops new approaches and strategies for the conservation and restoration of our cultural heritage with the aim of establishing the theoretical and operational principles that will be used as guidelines for the development of professional, effective and efficient conservation practices.
